# Plugin to rename images in WordPress with names Google understands

APC Editorial's **Rename Media** changes an image's file name, together with all its sizes, and updates your site's links to the new address, without changing a single post's date. Free, on your own server.

[Free download](https://jode.io/#community)[See the step by step](https://jode.io/docs/site-tools/#rename-media)

- Every size at once

- Your site's links updated

- Post dates kept

In short

Rename Media adds an **APC - Rename Media** column to the WordPress Media Library. You type the new name, from "IMG_2391.jpg" to "fachada-escritorio.jpg", and the plugin renames **every file** of the image and points each link on your site to the new address.

It is part of APC Editorial, but it works on its own: you don't need to generate articles, it uses no AI and it never sends a file outside your server.

File names and SEO

## "IMG_2391" tells Google nothing.

The file name is one of the clues Google uses to understand an image. Google's own image SEO guide gives the example: a descriptive name is better than the name the camera makes up.

The name goes into the address of every size of the image and helps it show up in Google Images for the right search. Together with the [alt text](https://jode.io/addons-tools/ai-alt-text-generator/), it says what the photo is about. On a site in more than one language, Google recommends translating the file names too.

Rename Media cleans whatever you type into a safe name: it drops the accents (á becomes a, ç becomes c), turns everything lowercase, swaps spaces and symbols for hyphens and removes the "&". Before you save, Saved as shows the exact name that will stay.

| You type | Saved as | What changed |
| --- | --- | --- |

| Fachada Escritório Paulista | fachada-escritorio-paulista.jpg | Accent gone, lowercase, hyphens instead of spaces. |

| Logo & Marca 2026 | logo-marca-2026.png | The "&" goes and the words are joined by hyphens. |

| Foto Nova (1).JPG | foto-nova-1.jpg | Parentheses gone. The file extension stays the same. |

| IMG_2391 | img_2391.jpg | Lowercase only. The underscore stays: prefer hyphens between words, as Google recommends for addresses. |

Renaming in WordPress

## Changing the title doesn't change the file.

WordPress has no button to rename the file of an image already uploaded. The Title field only changes the item's name in the library; the file is still "IMG_2391.jpg".

Renaming through your hosting's file manager is worse: each image exists as several files, one per size, and the old addresses are stored in your posts' text, in Elementor's data and in your site settings. Changing the name from outside leaves all of that pointing to a file that no longer exists.

Rename Media does all of it at once, in a Media Library column.

| What happens | Change the title | Rename from outside | Rename Media |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |

| The file gets a new name | No | Yes | Yes |

| Every size at once | No | One by one | Yes |

| Site links updated | No | No | Yes |

| Post dates kept | Yes | Yes | Yes |

| Broken images afterwards | None | Many | None |

What it does

## A new name, across the whole site.

All from the APC - Rename Media column, row by row, without opening the editor.

### The final name before you save

The field starts with the current name. As you type, Saved as shows the clean name that will stay. The extension sits beside it and doesn't change.

### Every file of the image

The full image, every theme size, the large working copy WordPress creates and the original. If the [Image Converter](https://jode.io/addons-tools/convert-images-avif-webp/) made WebP or AVIF copies, they go along.

### Links switched across the site

In post and page text, in Elementor's data, in widgets and in your site settings. At the end, the screen says how many references were updated and across how many items.

### Dates untouched

No post or page changes its modified date. The message ends with Post dates unchanged.

### The attachment page comes along

The attachment page's address follows the new name, with a 301 redirect from the old one. The title changes too only when it was still the file name.

### PDFs and other files

It isn't just images: a PDF or a document in the library can be renamed too, with your site's links updated and the dates kept.

Safe

## Either everything changes, or nothing does.

Renaming touches files and addresses spread across your site. That is why Rename Media never leaves the job half done:

- **It rolls back on its own:** if a file can't be renamed, the ones already renamed go back to the old name and the screen says nothing was changed.

- **It never overwrites:** if another file in the folder already uses the name, the plugin adds a number, such as -1, instead of replacing the other file.

- **Cropped or rotated images too:** WordPress's Restore original image button keeps working afterwards.

- **One thing at a time:** during a clean-up of converted images, renaming doesn't start and the screen asks you to try again in a minute.

- **It tells you what's missing:** if a reference couldn't be updated, the message says how many, so you can check those posts.

FAQ

## Questions about renaming images.

### How do I rename an image in WordPress after uploading it?

WordPress can't do it on its own. With APC Editorial, turn on the Rename Media tool, open the Media Library in list view, type the new name in the APC - Rename Media column and click Rename.

### Does changing the image's title change the file name?

No. The title is only the item's name in the library. Rename Media changes the actual file, and changes the title along with it only when it was still the file name: a title someone typed is never replaced.

### Will the links on my pages break?

No. Every old address of the image, in every size, is switched to the new one in post and page text, in Elementor's data, in widgets and in your site settings. If a reference can't be updated, the message says how many.

### What about other sites linking to the old file?

The plugin updates everything inside your site, and the attachment page gets a 301 redirect from the old address. A link from outside that points straight to the old file is not redirected. That is why the best time to rename is right after uploading the image, before it gets around.

### Does the posts' modified date change?

No. The addresses are switched without saving the posts again, so no post or page changes its date. The final message confirms it: Post dates unchanged.

### Does it work with images converted to WebP or AVIF?

Yes. The light copies the [Image Converter](https://jode.io/addons-tools/convert-images-avif-webp/) created are renamed together with the original, and switching the version your site shows keeps working afterwards.

### Why doesn't Rename show up in the editor's media window?

On purpose. With a post open, the editor holds the old addresses and could write them back when saving, breaking the image. That is why renaming lives only in the Media Library, where no post is open.

### What is the best name for an image?

A few words that describe the image, joined by hyphens, such as "fachada-escritorio-paulista". The plugin already removes accents, spaces and capitals for you. On a site in more than one language, use the name in the page's language.
