  • In the posts list and the editor
  • Your logo and brand colors
  • Comes out in WebP or AVIF

In short

The Featured image - AI add-on generates the featured image of posts, pages and other post types with AI, right from the posts list or the editor. It uses your prompt, your brand colors and logo, delivers the exact size you set, converts to WebP or AVIF and writes the alt text.

It works for any post on your site, including old ones and the ones you wrote by hand. The articles APC itself generates get their image from the editorial plan's settings.

The featured image

The image that earns the click.

In WordPress, the featured image represents the post. It shows up long before anyone reads the first sentence: on your blog, on social networks and even on Google.

Most themes show the featured image at the top of the article and in the blog, category and related-posts lists. SEO plugins such as Yoast and Rank Math usually use it as the sharing image when no other one was chosen, so it is what shows up when someone sends the link on WhatsApp, LinkedIn or Facebook.

A post without a featured image leaves a gap in the blog list and a card with no picture on social networks. A stock photo fixes that, but repeats the same look as your competitors and almost never has your brand colors. An image made with AI for the post's subject solves both problems.

Where it shows up Why it matters In the add-on
Top of the article and blog lists It is the first impression for anyone who lands on your site. An exact size, the same on every post.
Sharing on social networks SEO plugins usually use it on the link card. With your logo and your brand colors.
Google Discover According to Google, large images, at least 1200 px wide, help win visits from Discover. The width and height you choose.
Screen readers and image search Alt text describes the image to people who can't see it, and to Google. Alt text written by AI in the output language.

What you ask the AI

A good prompt, without effort.

AI draws what you describe. A good request names the subject, the scene, the style (photo or illustration), the light and the colors, and also what must not appear, such as text or other brands' logos.

In the add-on, you choose how much you want to write:

  • Nothing: leave the Image generation prompt empty and the plugin uses a ready-made prompt, together with the post's title.
  • Once: write your prompt in the add-on and it applies to every image generated from a title.
  • Per image: in Customize this image, describe just this image, or click Generate image prompt and AI reads the article and writes the description and the image name for you.

What it does

AI featured images on any screen.

A tab to set it up once, and a button in every place where you already handle the featured image.

Right from the posts list

The Generate with AI button in the APC Thumb column and the APC - Generate Image link under the title create the image without opening the post.

Many posts at once

Select the posts, pick APC - Generate Image in the bulk actions and each one gets its own image. Up to 5 are created at the same time; the others wait their turn and start on their own.

Inside the editor

In the classic editor, the APC – Generate Featured Image With AI tab. In the block editor and Elementor, a button right below the featured image.

Your brand in the image

Under Brand colors, one color code per line. Under Logo / brand image (optional), your logo: the AI image incorporates it.

Light and at the right size

The image always comes out at the width and height you set (900 × 660 px by default) and is converted to WebP or AVIF in the Image format & quality card.

Alt text included

An Anthropic model writes the alt text following accessibility best practices, in the Output language you choose. Any text inside the image comes out in that language too.

No waiting around

Close the tab. The image finishes itself.

Creating an image takes a few minutes. You don't need to watch it: the generation keeps going on its own and, when it ends, the plugin sets the image as the post's featured image.

  • Never charged twice: clicking again or opening the same screen in another tab doesn't create a second paid image.
  • Failures in plain sight: if something goes wrong, the reason shows up under the image, in the posts list, until you click Dismiss.
  • Honest alt text: if the alt text can't be written, it stays empty with a notice, never a copy of the title.
  • A real name: the file and its title in the Media Library carry the Image name you give, or the post's title, never a name like IMG_0042.

Step by step

Your first image in 4 steps.

The add-on's settings live in the Featured image - AI tab and apply to the whole installation.

  1. Turn the add-on on

In Global Settings › Add-ons/Tools, turn on Featured image - AI and tick under Show on these post types: where the button should appear. The default is Posts and Pages.

  2. Save the 2 keys

In Global Settings, the OpenAI key creates the image and the Anthropic key writes the alt text. Without them, the buttons show up locked.

  3. Set up your brand

In the Image settings card, set the prompt, brand colors, size and logo. Then pick the format in the Image format & quality card.

  4. Generate the image

Click Generate with AI in the posts list or in the editor. When the image is ready, it is already the post's featured image.

The step by step with every screen is in the AI images docs. The articles APC generates use the editorial plan's image settings: see the featured image docs.

FAQ

Questions about AI featured images.

What is the ideal featured image size in WordPress?

It depends on your theme. The add-on uses 900 × 660 px by default and delivers exactly the size you set: AI creates at a resolution it supports and the plugin fits the result to the size you asked for. For Google Discover, Google asks for images at least 1200 px wide.

Can the image carry my company's logo?

Yes. Pick your logo under Logo / brand image (optional) and the AI image incorporates it. Under Brand colors, add one color code per line so the image uses your palette.

Can I generate images for old posts, in bulk?

Yes. In the posts list, select the posts, pick APC - Generate Image in the bulk actions and click Apply. Each post gets its own image, and you can close the tab while they are created.

How much does an AI featured image cost?

The cost goes to your own accounts: the image to OpenAI and the alt text to Anthropic. It depends on the model and on the Image quality: higher quality costs more. Every generated image shows up with its cost in the AI Cost History.

Does it work in Elementor and the block editor?

Yes. In the block editor, the button sits in the featured image panel. In Elementor, right after the featured image in the page settings. In the classic editor, in a tab of its own in the featured image window.

Can I write my own prompt?

Yes, in 2 ways. The add-on's Image generation prompt applies to every image. In Customize this image, what you describe applies to that image only and never changes the add-on's default.

Is the AI's original image kept?

It is, unless you turn on Delete the AI-generated original from the server after conversion. That option saves server space, but the image can no longer go back to its original file.

What about images inside the article's text?

For those, use Add Image with AI: it creates the image in the editor's media window and you use it right there, in the middle of the text.
